Hayes Brakes - Power Perfected
At Hayes Brakes we believe that reaching a level of braking perfection requires an ongoing process that never ends. Since our first bicycle disc brake, created in 1972, we have continued this quest for perfection with every brake we have developed along the way. While we see our current Dominion line of brakes as perfected, our journey is never over. Using three main ingredients; our Heritage, our Engineering, and our ability to Re-Think everything we know about brakes shaped our way to perfection.
Heritage
Hayes has been manufacturing brakes since the 1950s. Over the past 70+ years, we have accumulated brake design experience for bicycles, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, side by sides, snowmobiles, military vehicles, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, and turf care equipment. During this period, we generated over 100 patents in the USA and many more on a global level.

In 1972 we contract manufactured our first ever bicycle disc brake and started to shape the future of bicycle brake systems. In 1997 we revolutionized the mountain bike industry by introducing the first mass-produced hydraulic bicycle disc brake under our new bicycle-specific brand name, Hayes Disc Brakes. With more than 45 years of experience designing high-end bicycle brake systems, Hayes has been a pioneer within the industry.
Hayes engineers have developed many of the current braking standards the entire industry uses today. Such as the post mount, 6 bolt rotor mounting, along with the 160, 180, and 203 rotor sizes.

Hayes Brakes Background
Engineered
Hayes is an engineering powerhouse. Benefiting from cross-departmental synergy, we can adapt technologies such as our Two-Stroke-Dual-Port-Bleeding from our Power Sports division and incorporate it with our cycling brakes. Another example comes from our breadth of bicycle brands. Our silky-smooth lever feel is provided by a glide ring on our master-cylinder piston. The idea to include this glide ring was derived from our suspension technology within our brand Manitou.
During our development process, we set performance targets and duty cycle requirements, we utilize a variety of development tools and technics including kinematic math models evaluating every component of the brake to improve its performance characteristics. We utilize static finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize each component of the brake for strength and weight.

When it comes to laboratory testing, we ensure every product completes a comprehensive list including cycle testing (fatigue), environmental testing, strength testing, impact testing, vibration testing, performance testing, corrosion testing, durability testing, and extreme usage testing to ensure nothing but a positive experience for our customers. In addition to the lab, we also incorporate real-life testing. By mounting data acquisition equipment to a wide variety of global test riders' bicycles, we can gather data and learn from everyday heroes on local trails to world cup DH athletes to make sure our brakes can perform in all riding conditions and skill levels.
We do all this to ensure that all components are consistent, durable, and safe.

Re-Think
Re-thinking has always been an integral part of our design process and from time to time a comprehensive rethinking approach is needed to reset yourself on your way to perfection. It was back in 2015 when we went back to zero, cleaned our desks, and started over again asking ourselves the similar questions we asked way back when we created the first Hayes mountain bike brake. How do riders actually use their brakes, what are the ergonomic requirements, and what characteristics do high-end bicycle brakes need to fulfill the terrain and speeds of current riding styles?

Making simply the most powerful brake was never the goal – designing a brake that can offer unrivaled power with the ability to intuitively modulate and control said power was the true challenge. After three years of constant learning, investigations, testing, and rethinking everything we knew about braking, the Hayes Dominion A4 was born. Following a low effort system (Lofi) approach offering a light, predictable, and progressive ramp up combined with a crisp bite point we were able to significantly reduce rider fatigue while providing more confidence in the control of your braking.

Other technologies such as our Stable-Rate-Link, King Pin, QuickBite2 gave the brake enough power to compete with anything in the market. With service in mind, we also included mechanic-friendly tech such as our Two-Stroke-Dual-Port-Bleeding and Crosshair alignment to make installation and maintenance a breeze. All of these features combined are direct results of our engineering team taking the time to think of everything to provide the most useful tech possible with incredible consistency and the best braking experience in the industry.

Hayes strives to deliver the most powerful brakes on the market with unrivaled feel and modulation. Making power is easy, it’s power controlled that sets us apart. The Hayes Dominion series brakes deliver all this - the multiple awards and test wins they gained globally are just the proof!
